Our Foundation

Every strong lake community needs more than docks and boats — it needs a foundation built on vision, rules, and stories. Here you’ll find the heart of Runyan Lake Inc. distilled into three pillars: our guiding mission, the bylaws that keep us afloat, and the minutes and newsletters that capture our shared journey. Think of this page as the anchor point for understanding who we are, why we exist, and how we keep the waters calm and the community vibrant.

Vision & Mission

🌊 Vision

RLI is dedicated to being a proactive participant in all aspects of water sports and active lake living. The board will represent the members it serves in the best interest of the lake regardless of personal, professional, social or political influences.

⚓ Mission

The purpose of RLI is to advocate safe boating and water sports while maintaining high water quality and promoting
Fraternity Thru Friendship.

Runyan Lake Inc. (RLI) is a Summer Resort Corporation, authorized and empowered by Michigan Public Act 137 of 1929, and Michigan Public Act 44 of 2006. RLI was issued a corporation charter by the state of Michigan on November 10, 1950, and its Bylaws are enforceable as set forth in the aforementioned Michigan Public Acts, as demonstrated by Michigan court decisions and Michigan legislative amendments.

The current RLI Bylaws were most recently amended by vote of the General Membership on 8/23/2024, consistent with the proposals below.

Background

In 2006 the RLI Board of Trustees proposed various revisions to the bylaws to bring them up to date and eliminate inconsistencies.
The proposed changes were reviewed during the Spring 2007 General Membership Meeting for feedback, and approved by the Membership
with minor changes. Additional amendment proposals have been presented during subsequent General Membership Meetings as set forth
in the bylaws. Copies of the updated bylaws are distributed to all members whenever changes are approved, and are provided to property
sellers and new property owners. If you need additional electronic or hard copies, please contact us.

Amendments since 2007 included:

  • Revisions to accommodate properties being developed within RLI territory without lake access.
  • Consistency updates for meetings, voting majorities, members, and grammar.
  • Removal of language referring to the special assessment for the boat ramp.
  • Trustee nominations required ahead of Fall General Meeting for proxy voting.
  • Relaxed text so annual votes don’t require annual amendments.
  • September 2010: compliance with Attorney General Opinion 7230.
  • September 2011: corrected recitals, updated audit methods, trustee listings.
  • September 2015: added late fee for dues unpaid by April 1, updated trustee listings.
  • August 2018: clarified board authority as local governmental representative.
  • August 2019: trustees must be in good standing with neighborhood associations.
  • August 2024: added Section 6.01(a) to comply with PA 68 of 2024 (solar energy systems).
